Get Ready NYC, Tiny House Glamping Is Coming to Governors Island

The changing of the seasons is inevitable, but that doesn’t mean your fantasy of sleeping under the stars has to end. Starting Labor Day, you can book an outlook shelter on Governors Island to extend the camping — or glamping — season past the long days of summer.

The new outlook shelters, part of Collective Retreats’ Governors Island location, will give guests all the benefits of camping on one of New York’s most historic islands with all the comforts of a hotel room — plus heating.

The 300 square-foot units are reminiscent of a tiny home with a king bed, couch, and private bathroom with rain-style shower starting at $725 per night. Start the morning sipping coffee while lounging back in an Adirondack chair on one of two private decks and end the night taking a long soak in the tub.

“We feel very strongly that these units will be four seasons of the year,” Peter Mack, the founder and CEO of Collective Retreats, told Travel + Leisure, adding that he’s hopeful Governors Island could eventually be open year-round. “There’s been a really fascinating movement … around things like tiny homes and modular structures. We think this is the future of experiential hotels and hospitality.”
Mack said the property will start with four outlook shelters before expanding to eight on Governors Island. Eventually, the company will look to introduce the outlook shelters to their other retreats in Colorado, Montana, upstate New York, and Texas.

And there’s more to do than just relaxing in the units: Guests can play with the free lawn games like life-sized Jenga, rent a bike to explore the island (the island’s history dates back to even before the colonial era when it was secured by the British) or book a 90-minute harbor tour to take advantage of the unmatched views.
You won’t go hungry during your time at Collective Governors Island either. The retreat has several dining options, including at the island’s Three Peaks restaurant (think challah French toast for breakfast on the weekends or a flat iron steak with vegetables and herb butter for dinner). Want to cook yourself? They offer BBQ boxes for purchase where they provide the meat, the sides and the grill. Step out of the retreat to find options like tacos and ice pops at one Governors Island’s food spots.

“There’s just a huge sense of escape. It’s only an eight minute ferry ride from downtown Manhattan, but it’s just a different world,” Mack said. “Resoundingly, people are discovering Governors Island for the first time, which is pretty wild. We’re actually the closest hotel rooms to the Statue of Liberty.”

If you don’t want to wait until Labor Day, there are currently 37 tents on the island available for the summer. Source: here
